North Alabama is well served by rail with a Norfolk Southern mainline running East to West and a CSX mainline running North to South. These lines are supported by 2 short line railroads and another Norfolk Southern mainline that traverses the eastern edge of North Alabama and a line that runs from Florence to Birmingham.

In a partnership with Norfolk Southern, the Port of Huntsville operates the International Intermodal Center. The Center provides 2 gantry cranes that move containers from rail to trucks or even to the nearby runway to be flown as air cargo.
